Magpies Primed For Finals Footy

THIS year’s minor premiers the Souths Logan Magpies will have one more important hit-out before they are forced to play do-or-die football.
The Magpies will host Norths Devils at Davies Park this weekend – and while both teams are guaranteed a safe passage through to next weekend’s preliminary finals – the two sides will be looking for a strong win to give them that essential ingredient to playing successful finals football – momentum.
“We just have to keep going,” Magpies captain Phil Dennis said of the road ahead. “All of the teams in the top six are good teams.
“We have been beaten by four of the top six sides this year, so it just depends on how we play on the day.”
Both the Magpies and the Devils had an imposing start to the season, and they were locked in a battle for the number one spot for weeks.
But while the Devils seemed to take their foot off the pedal towards the closing stages of the competition, the Magpies were able to charge their way to the top.
Dennis said the results had as much to do with their fruitful alliance with the Canberra Raiders as it did their ‘back-to-basics’ approach earlier on in the season when they lost some of their good form.
“Canberra has got a lot to do with it I think – but the Brisbane boys and the boys who fly in all work well together and we all have a good relationship,” he said.
“But we did have a good start, so we just went back to the game plan we had then – for a bit there we were going wide instead of forward and when you are going sideways you are going nowhere.”
The Devils will be looking to build on their solid win against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls last weekend.
The Seagulls went into the game arguably with better form – and with an eye on taking the number two spot from the Devils.
“It was a motivation,” captain Mark Leafa said of his side’s strong showing. “In the earlier part of the season we set the bar high and we had a lot of teams chasing us.
“But in the last couple of games, we haven’t had the consistency – so we want to find that again.
“And we know we have to play our best footy now – it’s only 80 minutes that will see if we are still in the finals.”

SIX captains walked on to the Suncorp Stadium turf today and all of them had the same burning ambition – to be there on grand final day.
The team representatives – Phil Dennis (Souths Logan Magpies), Mark Leafa (Norths Devils), Daly Cherry-Evans (Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles), Chris Sheppard (Northern Pride), Darren Bain (Wynnum Manly Seagulls) and Neil Budworth (Mackay Cutters) – were together to launch the Intrust Super Cup 2010 finals series.
For reigning premiers the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles, another grand final appearance would highlight their remarkable performances in the competition so far.
After a few rough patches at the start of the season, they have come back with force and have surged into third spot on the ladder thanks to their late season form.
“We have won eight games so it has been a good run,” Cherry-Evans said. “But I am not worried about it being time for a loss – I think you make your own luck and your own fate.”
Another team who are coming into the finals series with an impressive winning streak to their name is the Northern Pride.
It is Sheppard’s farewell season and he would love nothing more than a fairytale ending – although he is well aware of the hard work ahead for his team.
“I would love to finish the season on a high – that is the plan – but we have to see how we go,” he said.
“We got close last year and finished third the year before that so we would like to go one better.”
The Magpies finished the year as minor premiers for the second year in a row and while that is an achievement worth savouring, Dennis wants to take home the double this year.
And he knows just how good it feels to win the Queensland Cup title – having been part of the team that took the honours in 2008.
“I never thought I would win one, so to have done that with a side that was running last for so many years was great,” Dennis said. “I would like to have that feeling again.”
The Norths Devils also know that winning feeling – with the club having taken out this year’s Spotless Club Championship.
And while the Devils have been consistent all year – finishing in the top two – Leafa thinks his team will have to focus squarely on their own performances from here on and not worry about what their opposition can do.
“We can be our own worst enemy and we know that every team is capable of winning from No. 1 right through to 6,” he said.
Another team who have shown consistency this year is the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and while they have a tough path ahead of them to get to the grand final, Bain is hoping for a sea of red, white and green to be on display on grand final day.
“We have got some really good supporters and to get here for the grand final; for ourselves and for our supporters would be a great experience,” he said.
Without a doubt, the surprise packet of the finals series is the Mackay Cutters.
Wooden spooners in 2009, they have turned their season around this year to secure an unlikely finals berth.
“We have a new coach in Paul Bramley and he has really changed the culture at the club ... but he has also brought enjoyment to the club,” Budworth said.
The Intrust Super Cup semi finals kick off this weekend with the Sunshine Coast to host the Mackay Cutters on Saturday at 2pm and Souths Logan at home to the Norths Devils at 3pm on Sunday.
The final game of the weekend will be played at Barlow Park in Cairns on Sunday, at 3.30pm, between the Northern Pride and the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
The grand final will be played at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, September 19 with kickoff at 2pm.

THEY arrived at Bishop Park with a 59-0 scoreline in their back pocket and a top-two finish within their grasp. But little did the Wynnum Manly Seagulls know; they were heading towards an ambush.
After weeks littered with some indifferent performances, Norths Devils showed the challengers they meant business, recording a 30-12 win to finish the regular season with the number two spot.
The afternoon started well for the Devils, who were first on the board through prolific winger Daniel Ogden.
He was in again for the home side only a few minutes later – and his double was enough to see him top the Intrust Super Cup leading try-scorer ladder with 19 to his name this season.
When Brendon Gibb accepted a pass close to the line before crashing over, it seemed like the Devils would do it easily.
However, the Seagulls fought back gamely and while they stiffened their resolve in their defence for the remainder of the half – they were having trouble putting things together in attack.
However, a long-range bust with only minutes to go before the siren caught the Devils on the hop, and the Seagulls were able to pass the ball wide to the right to see John Te Reo over the line and bring the scores to 16-6.
After the break, it didn’t take long for Norths – whose forwards were making light work through the middle – to get on the board again, firstly with a try to Gideon Mzembe and then again through Jack Reed.
But Wynnum still had fight in them – and Shea Moylan, who had a strong day out for the visitors, scored to narrow the gap to bring the scores to 24-12.
With the momentum now behind them, the Seagulls had the Devils worried, and they forced them to make a few rushed decisions.
But it was to be the Devils day, and the final try of the afternoon came all too easily.
Ogden made a bust after receiving a good inside ball and went streaking towards the line. However, he was cut down in a great tackle just in front of the posts.
Asher Elemani moved into dummy half – but instead of tackling the man with the ball, the Seagulls defence had eyes for everyone else and the hooker in effect was able stroll over the line to put the ball down.
Their 30-12 win now sees the Devils head to Davies Park next weekend to take on the Souths Logan Magpies, while the Seagulls slipped to fifth on the ladder and will have to travel north to Barlow Park to tackle the Northern Pride.

Devils Secure Club Championship

THE Norths Devils have secured the 2010 Spotless Services Club Championship, despite facing an explosive final round showdown with nearest challenger the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
Norths have so far amassed 276 points to be clear of the Seagulls (252) and Redcliffe Dolphins (245).
Even if the Seagulls beat the Devils in Sunday’s Colts, FOGS Cup and Intrust Super Cup games, the 20 points from a possible clean-sweep would not be enough for the Baysiders to reel in the Nundah club.

THE Northern Pride has confirmed its spot in this year’s Intrust Super Cup finals series after recording a hard-fought 33-26 victory over the fast-finishing Norths Devils at Barlow Park last night.
In pursuit of a club record eighth-straight win, the Pride shot out to a commanding 24-4 lead at half-time.
“It was probably our best half of footy all year,” said Pride skipper Chris Sheppard.
The home team continued where it left off when play resumed in the second half, extending its lead to 30-4 with an early converted try.
But the match suddenly turned on its head as the Devils launched a stunning comeback.
The Devils narrowed the gap to 30-26 before Sheppard eased the pressure on his under siege team with a penalty goal and successful field goal attempt.
Sheppard said the Pride did well to hold out the Devils.
“We did not have the ball for about 25 to 30 minutes in that second half,” said Sheppard, who was named players’ player in his final home match.
“We were just on our line the whole time.”
Jason Roos and Brett Anderson were two of the standout performers for a Pride side that went into the game without regular stars Nick Slyney and Clint Amos.
With 26 competition points safely in its keep, the Pride is now guaranteed of playing finals footy for a third-straight year.
The surge into the finals completes a stunning turnaround for the David Maiden-coached outfit.
The Pride was languishing in ninth spot with just four wins from their opening 10 games.
Sheppard credits a large part of the club’s revival to “stability” and the fact that the Pride has kept virtually the same team on the field for a long period.

NORTHERN PRIDE v NORTHS DEVILS
When & Where: Saturday, August 21 @ Barlow Park 7pm
Preview: The Pride will be without the services of blossoming forward Nick Slyney for the crucial round 21 clash in Cairns. Slyney has been called into Neil Henry’s Cowboys squad after a string of outstanding performances. Pride coach David Maiden has named Noel Underwood as Slyney’s replacement for the clash that is set to attract a bumper crowd. With popular captain Chris Sheppard playing his last match at home and the Pride one win away from securing a position in the finals, Pride officials are expecting their biggest crowd of the season. The match will also see classy hooker Jay Aston return to Barlow Park. Aston started the season with the Pride but gained a release mid-season to link back with the Devils. Norths (29) are locked in a tight battle with Souths Logan (30) for the minor premiership. On the milestone front, Pride veteran Rod Jensen lines up for his 50th Cup match. Jensen, who first played Queensland Cup with the Young Guns, has scored 38 career tries.
EASTS TIGERS v SOUTHS LOGAN
Saturday, August 21 @ Langlands Park, 2pm* live on ABC TV
The Tigers’ forward pack has been decimated for the clash against the competition front-runners. Regular starters Ben Vaeau, Matt McPhee and Daniel Fullarton are out, leaving experienced pair Cameron Durnford and James Stosic to carry much of the burden against a formidable Magpies outfit. A win here would secure back-to-back minor premierships for the Magpies if the Norths Devils go down to the red-hot Pride in Cairns. The minor premiership would be a major feather in the cap of first-year Queensland Cup coach Mark Beaumont, who has gelled a diverse squad of local and interstate-based NRL footballers into a powerful unit. The Magpies, who have won their last five games against Easts, enter the match on the back of a solid 36-22 win over the Comets. Michael Brophy and James Stuart scored doubles in that match and the exciting duo will again take their spots in the Magpies backline for the Langlands Park clash. Easts centre Paoa Faamita plays his 50th Queensland Cup match.
MACKAY CUTTERS v IPSWICH JETS
Saturday, August 21 @ Mackay Juniors, 5.30pm
After a frustrating draw against Tweed last weekend, Mackay must re-group quickly and focus on knocking over the unpredictable Jets in Saturday night’s clash. A loss would all but end Mackay’s hopes of figuring in its first Intrust Super Cup finals series. Ipswich is waging a battle of its own and must win to be a chance of avoiding the 2010 wooden-spoon. With Titans players Sam Tagataese, Esi Tonga and Aaron Cannings named in their 17, the Jets aren’t lacking firepower. They also have tough utility Keiron Lander pencilled in for a return to the top grade. But Ipswich will have to improve drastically on its last-start effort against the Sunshine Coast if it is to trouble a desperate Cutters outfit. Mackay coach Paul Bramley has named an unchanged side with key dual registered players Grant Rovelli, Ben Harris and Isaak Ah Mau again with the Cowboys. But Bramley is quietly confident the predominately “local” contingent can lift the club to a win this weekend and press on for a finals berth. Mackay forward Luke Fatnowna plays his 50th Queensland Cup game.
CENTRAL COMETS v TWEED HEADS
Saturday, August 21 @ Browne Park, 7pm
The Central Comets have been bolstered by the inclusion of Bronco Nick Kenny for the round 21 clash. The Rockhampton product’s inclusion is a massive boost for the depleted Comets, who are down on forward power with the likes of Darren Mapp and Alan Rothery on the sideline. Comets coach Wayne Barnett believes Kenny is capable of playing close to the full 80 minutes in front of his home crowd. A Comets victory would put the team out of the running for the dreaded wooden-spoon. However, the home side won’t have an easy task against a Tweed outfit that fought for every inch in last Saturday’s 18-all draw against the Mackay Cutters. Tweed is also out of finals contention but will fancy its chances of finishing the season with two wins and extending their premiership tally to a respectable 19 points. Exciting Tweed fullback Shannon Walker will take the field for his 50th Cup match with the Seagulls. The star of the Tweed’s 2007 premiership win has scored a staggering 42 tries from just 49 appearances.
WYNNUM MANLY v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS
Sunday, August 22 @ BMD Kougari Oval 3pm
Redcliffe will fight to keep its season alive when it arrives at BMD Kougari Oval for Sunday’s Intrust Super Cup blockbuster. The match is virtually the last throw of the dice for the eighth-placed Dolphins, who were extremely unlucky to concede a match-winning try in the dying minutes to the Northern Pride last week. Along with keeping its premiership dream alive, the prized Herald Cup is another incentive for the Dolphins to turn in a big performance. The Dolphins will come up against a Wynnum Manly team high on confidence after consecutive wins, the most recent a 56-28 win over Easts. Paul Green’s Seagulls have also been bolstered by the return of key forward Jack Afamasaga and centre David Seage. Seage picked up a groin strain in the round 19 win over the Comets but he has been named to make his 150th Queensland Cup appearance for Wynnum Manly on Sunday. Redcliffe dominates the head to head bayside rivalry, winning 21 of the 30 games (two have been drawn).
BURLEIGH BEARS v SUNSHINE COAST
Sunday, August 22 @ Pizzey Park, 3pm
The second massive 3pm game on Sunday is set to be played with all the intensity of a cut-throat semi-final. Defending premiers the Sunshine Coast can confirm their spot in the finals and could possibly even leapfrog Wynnum Manly into third with a round 21 victory. Along with the Pride, the Sea Eagles are the form team of the competition and have hit top gear at exactly the right time for Brandon Costin. The Sunshine Coast thumped the Ipswich Jets 52-10 last weekend to further strengthen their imposing for and against record (+184). Star fullback Dennis Sandow scored 20 points with two tries and six goals to eclipse Trent Hodkinson’s club record for most points in a season. Burleigh coach Mark Gee has named an unchanged 17 for the Pizzey Park clash. The Bears were super competitive against Norths last week but a number of defensive lapses proved costly in the final wash up. Another loss here could see either Mackay or Redcliffe join the Bears on 23 points with a round to play.

Desperation Returns For Devils

FOR many spectators, the sight of Norths back-rower Brendon Gibb diving for the boots of Burleigh flyer Adam Fielder was just a regulation ankle tap.
But for Norths Devils coach Kevin Carmichael, it was much more than that.
Gibb’s try-saving tackle in the dying minutes of the first half proved to Carmichael that the desperation was now back in the Devils’ game as they attempt to steamroll their way into the Intrust Super Cup grand final on September 19.
After a lean streak punctuated by a 42-10 loss to the Sunshine Coast last weekend, question marks were raised about the Devils’ ability to fire in the finals.
But fresh from a hard-fought 23-16 win over the Burleigh Bears at Bishop Park on Saturday, the Nundah club’s campaign is on track again.
It wasn’t so much the win that had Carmichael jumping for joy, but the manner in which the Devils went about it.
For 80 minutes, the Devils were prepared to knuckle down and fight for every metre in the territorial battle.
The home team had to claw its way back from an early 6-0 deficit and then had to find something special when the scoreboard read 10-10 at a crucial stage in the second half.
Not surprisingly, it was experienced playmaker Shane Perry who engineered the big plays for the Devils.
Perry sliced through the Burleigh line to post the first points of the second half in the 47th minute.
Troyden Watene missed the conversion but the touch down had put the Devils in front for the first time 10-6.
Burleigh responded soon after with a try to big centre Chad Grintell.
But Norths quickly regained the ascendancy in the 69th minute when Gibb steamed on to a short pass from Perry and off-loaded to Jack Reed in support.
Reed ran around under the posts for his second and it wasn’t long before Perry completed his double to extend the lead to 12.
Perry added a field goal to put the result well and truly out of Burleigh’s reach.
Nathan Ross, a late replacement for Nick Parfitt at fullback, scored a consolation try for the visitors.
Burleigh has now surrendered third spot and finds itself in the difficult position of having to beat the rampant Sunshine Coast Eagles in round 21 or the Northern Pride the following week to be assured of a spot in the top six.

THE Norths Devils will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's heavy defeat when they host the Burleigh Bears at Bishop Park on Saturday.
NORTHS DEVILS v BURLEIGH BEARS
When & Where: Saturday, August 14 @ Bishop Park, 2pm* live on ABC TV
Preview: Three weeks out from the finals, Burleigh’s moment of truth arrives in this important round 20 clash at Nundah. Burleigh has faltered at the finish in recent campaigns but they have enough competition points in the bank to be in control of their own destiny this time around. A win against the Devils should be enough to get the Bears into the finals, regardless of what happens over the next two weeks. Burleigh is in good form but Mark Gee’s team will have to overcome a Norths outfit that should be hungry after last week’s 42-10 capitulation to the Sunshine Coast. To be fair, not a lot went the Devils’ way in that match and coach Kevin Carmichael will be keen to get his side back in winning form ahead of the finals. Both teams are close to full-strength and have named formidable line-ups for the ABC TV match-of-the-round showdown. Burleigh has won 18 of the previous 29 Queensland Cup matches between the clubs, including the last five.
SUNSHINE COAST v IPSWICH JETS
Saturday, August 14 @ Stockland Park, 2pm
Impressive Sunshine Coast youngster Chris Boss has retained his spot in the Sea Eagles’ 17 after an eye-catching debut against Norths last weekend. The hard-running back-rower lifted the Sea Eagles with an energetic display against the Devils and coach Brandon Costin will be looking for a similar performance on Saturday. The Sunshine Coast has everything to play for in this round 20 clash against the last-placed Jets. A win could potentially lift them to third spot, while a loss would jeopardise their top six prospects. Ipswich is quietly confident of springing an upset after finding some rhythm in their 40-26 victory over Tweed Heads last weekend. The Jets were boosted by the return of hooker Michael Fisher from injury and the inclusion of Titans trio Esi Tonga, Aaron Cannings and Sam Tagataese in that match. Ipswich coach Glenn Lazarus has named an unchanged team.
MACKAY CUTTERS v TWEED HEADS
Saturday, August 14 @ Mackay Juniors, 5.30pm
Reliable Tweed forward Brock Hunter steps out for his 50th match in Seagulls colours. While his team is out of finals contention, the Seagulls can play a spoiling role and bundle the Cutters out of play-off contention as well. Mackay has a favourable run home but Paul Bramley’s team may have to win all three games to qualify for their first finals series. Their job has been made that little bit harder by the promotion of Grant Rovelli, Ben Harris and Isaak Ah Mau into the Cowboys NRL squad this weekend. Rovelli’s key five-eighth position has been taken by former Queensland Origin star Josh Hannay. Hannay, who is dual signed with the Moranbah Miners, has been used sparingly in the Intrust Super Cup this year but the former Cowboy now shapes as a key figure in the Cutters’ bid for a top six berth.
SOUTHS LOGAN v CENTRAL COMETS
Saturday, August 14 @ Marley Brown Oval, Gladstone 7pm
Souths Logan are taking their round 20 clash to Gladstone and the Central Queensland locals will have no shortage of big name players to run their eyes over. The Magpies have named Raiders NRL regulars Glen Buttriss and Troy Thompson in their star-studded side. A win over the Comets would push Mark Beaumont’s team a step closer to securing the minor premiership for a second-straight season. Souths Logan won last year’s corresponding game 48-12 after stringing together two brilliant halves of football to overrun the Comets. With no finals spot to push for this time around, the injury-hit Comets squad will do well to avoid a similar scoreline. However, Central boasts a strong head to head record against the Magpies, winning 16 and drawing two of the 28 previous encounters. The Comets have also been boosted by the news that Wayne Barnett will stay on and coach the team in 2011.
REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v NORTHERN PRIDE
Sunday, August 15 @ Dolphin Oval, 2.30pm
Experienced Redcliffe halfback Mick Roberts returns to the Dolphins line-up for Saturday’s crunch game against the in-form Pride. Roberts was dropped to the FOGS Cup for the round 19 clash against Burleigh but the former Bronco has been reinstated for a match the Dolphins simply must win. A loss here would virtually spell the end of Redcliffe’s premiership ambitions. The proud Redcliffe club’s backs-to-the-wall mentality spells trouble for the Pride. However, the Pride won’t be short on confidence after winning six in a row. The northerners also have a strong head to head record against the Dolphins, with only one loss from five meetings. But most importantly, the Pride has found some genuine stability in its playing and coaching ranks over the last month. The 17 has rarely changed from week to week and the players and fans also know what direction the club is going in after coach David Maiden was re-appointed for the 2011 season.
WYNNUM MANLY v EASTS TIGERS
Sunday, August 15 @ BMD Kougari Oval, 3pm
Easts can salvage something from a disappointing season when they travel to BMD Kougari Oval. The Tigers have been competitive all season but have found wins hard to come by. But the Langlands Park club can put a major dent in Wynnum Manly’s title ambitions with an upset win on Sunday. Wynnum sits in fourth spot but is still not guaranteed of a finals berth such is the tightness of the 2010 Intrust Super Cup competition. Wynnum fans will pay tribute to consistent back-rower Luke Dalziel-Don, who played his 100th game in the Seagulls’ last start 28-16 win over the Central Comets in Rockhampton. Dalziel-Don is itching for another crack at finals football and his form over the next three rounds will have a major bearing on whether Paul Green’s Seagulls are still alive in September.

THERE is something special brewing on the Sunshine Coast – and it has an eerie resemblance to last year’s stunning premiership surge.
Desperate to punch their way back into the top six, the Sea Eagles blew the Norths Devils off Bishop Park with a seven tries to two romp in their crucial round 19 Intrust Super Cup clash.
The Sea Eagles held an 18-0 advantage at half-time and raced away to an incredible 42-0 lead late in the game before tries from Troyden Watene and Daniel Ogden spared the Devils from further embarrassment.
Sunshine Coast coach Brandon Costin was delighted with his team’s performance, but conceded the Devils had probably drifted into their comfort zone given they were already virtually assured of a top two finish.
“In simple terms, we had more to play for,” Costin said.
“You see the table, if we happened to lose, we’d be down there in seventh or eighth with Mackay. It was just a game we had to win and that showed in our effort.”
With Queensland Residents back-rower Darcy Lussick resting a groin injury, the Coast blooded promising Colts youngster Chris Boss.
The young forward looked right at home in the top grade and Costin said he had already done enough to keep his spot even with the imminent return of Lussick.
Costin could sense his team was slightly flat after a week off with the split round but Boss’ inclusion quickly got them going again.
“He was great. The enthusiasm and energy he brought in (lifted the team),” Costin revealed.
“It worked out great that we could bring in a young kid that had some energy and excitement.”
Boss scored a brilliant second-half try when he burst through the Norths line and beat Devils fullback Javarn White for speed to cap off a stunning debut.
Regular back-line stars Dennis Sandow and Terence Seu Seu also performed strongly for the Sea Eagles, who host Ipswich this weekend.
Seu Seu has been a revelation at pivot, a position the Sea Eagles have struggled with at times.
“We haven’t lost a game since Terence went to five-eighth,” Costin said.
In a further boost to the Sea Eagles’ prospects of going back to back, Kyle Lodge is set to return from a hip problem against the Jets and key hooker Cameron Joyce is likely to be on deck for the following week’s clash against Burleigh.

NORTHS DEVILS v SUNSHINE COAST
Where & When: Saturday, August 7 @ Bishop Park, 2pm* live on ABC TV
Talented halfback Matt Smith makes his return from injury in Saturday’s crucial clash at Bishop Park. Devils coach Kevin Carmichael has slotted Smith straight back into the key playmaking role where the former Magpie will partner veteran Shane Perry in the halves. Smith will have three weeks to find his feet before the Devils embark on a finals campaign that promises so much. While the Devils are assured of a finals berth, they will have to work hard to claim the prestigious minor premiership. A win here would put Carmichael’s team back in front of Souths Logan with three rounds to play. The prospect of climbing the ladder is also a major motivational tool for Brandon Costin’s Sea Eagles, the team many of the competition heavyweights fear most. A victory would see the Sea Eagles soar into fifth spot on percentages and provide the 2009 premiers with an ideal launching pad leading into their final regular season matches against Ipswich, Burleigh and Mackay. The Coast enters this weekend’s clash in high spirits after a string of wins dating back to their round 15 victory over Easts in early July.
IPSWICH JETS v TWEED HEADS
Saturday, August 7 @ North Ipswich Reserve, 6pm
Ipswich players will have their first chance to impress Ben and Shane Walker since the brothers were announced as the club’s new coaches for the 2011 Intrust Super Cup season. The Jets will be looking to salvage something from a disappointing season in their penultimate home match this year. With support from the Ipswich City Council, the Jets will throw the gates open and have organised plenty of off-field entertainment for the kids. The Jets will also wear replica 1910 jerseys as part of rugby league’s 100 year anniversary celebrations in Ipswich. The jerseys will be auctioned after the match. The Ipswich team is set to be boosted by the return of classy hooker Michael Fisher from a broken hand. Fisher, out of action since Ipswich’s round’s 12 win over Easts – has been one of the club’s success stories with his form in the early rounds impressing many good judges. Ipswich will have to play well to overcome a talented Tweed outfit that is desperate to finish the season on a high note. A slow start to the season appears to have cost the Seagulls a chance of playing finals football this year. But Ben Anderson’s team is a realistic chance of winning all four of its remaining matches which would take their premiership tally to a respectable 11 wins. That is unlikely to be enough though, with 12 wins (24 competition points) shaping as the minimum requirement at this stage.

By Colleen Edwards
A CHANCE to get a leg-up in the race for the minor premiership and a foot in the door for a finals berth – there is plenty on the line for both the Norths Devils and the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles when they line up a Bishop Park on Saturday.
The Devils can thank their tremendous opening to the season for their strong standing on the ladder – they built up a solid foundation with eight straight wins and showed how beneficial a good start to the competition could prove to be.
“You don’t realise at the time, but if you look at the ladder now, you see how crowded it is,” Norths coach Kevin Carmichael said.
“Winning those games has given us a bit of breathing space. We were in a similar position last year where we had to win three out of our last four games or something similar, and it certainly puts a lot of pressure on a side.”
As one of only two teams who are guaranteed a spot in the finals, the Devils would be forgiven for taking their foot off the accelerator, especially coming out of a week off.
But Carmichael has assured there would be no let-up in the final weeks of the regular season.
“We are keen to finish the season on a high... after the draw (12-12 against Redcliffe), I was a little bit disappointed in our attack, and I thought it was a bit one-dimensional, we did a lot of one-out running.
“But I was pleased with our defence; it was a tough, physical game – as it always is against Redcliffe – so I thought we did well to not let in many points.”
And their attack will be given a boost this weekend, with the return from injury of halfback Matt Smith.
“Matt is back for us finally, he adds a lot to our game,” Carmichael said. “He might be a little bit rusty to start with, but it will be good to get him out there and prepared for the finals.
“He is a natural halfback so it will be good for him to take some pressure off Shane Perry who has had to take on a lot.”
While the Devils are assured of a finals berth, the Sunshine Coast sit just outside the top six; one point behind the Redcliffe Dolphins who went down 40-30 against Burleigh Bears in their Round 19 game.
Coach Brandon Costin said he was happy with the way his team had managed to gel in the past few weeks; winning important games along the way.
“I am happy that we are achieving what we’ve set out to achieve,” a measured Costin said.
“It is difficult ... it takes time to build relationships and to get in a groove on the field.
“Good teams are really tight – they spend time together, they respect each other and they trust each other.
“Early in the season – we didn’t have any of that, so when the pressure was applied, the cracks opened up. But we still have a lot of work to do.”
This game could be a defining moment in their season – but given the number of other teams in a similar predicament, a loss might not spell the end of their chances of defending their title.
“Every game is important – but if we lose this one and win the next three would it have been? Or if we win this one and lose the rest ... hindsight is big thing.
“This competition is amazing; you could not write a better script for the last four weeks,” Costin philosophised.
“But at the end of the day, it is a contest, and if we give it our best, hopefully the results will look after themselves.”

IT is now or never for the Norths Devils.
They have four games left to play in their regular season – and that will be all they play if they don’t find some good form soon.
One big test will come this weekend when they host the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles in their round 19 split round game at Bishop Park.
“It is an important game for us, our destiny is in our own hands,” coach Don Gailer said in the lead-up to the clash.
“The good thing is, I don’t have to spell it out to the team, and we don’t want to leave ourselves in a position where we have to rely on other results to go our way.”
By his own admission, the Devils have been in patchy form this year, and the good start they had to the season was whittled away through the middle stages of the competition.
While much of that can be attributed to the loss of key players to the injury-hit Intrust Super Cup side, Gailer said he was happy with the ease in which those players were able to slot into the top side.
“There was a six-seven week period where four or five of our players would go up into the Q Cup side, but you don’t get uptight about it because that is the role of the feeder team,” he said.
“It has been a good thing that the players who went up to play have been ready to go up and have played well.”
This weekend, they will be hoping for all hands on deck when they take on the Sea Eagles who are in a similarly precarious position.
“It will be like a grand final for the Sunshine Coast so I am expecting a very tough game,” Gailer said.
“We are going to have to work on our enthusiasm, I think when you have that many changes to a team from week to week, you struggle to get (that) consistency.
“But if we can apply ourselves for the full 70 minutes, I think we can turn the season around.”
In results from the first weekend of the split round, Wests Panthers continued their impressive run of form with a 50-6 hammering of Easts Tigers. Troy Rowbotham scored three times while Ben Demmel picked up a double.
The Redcliffe Dolphins took one step closer to the minor premiership with their 26-8 win over the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park, while the Wynnum Manly Seagulls defeated the Souths Logan Magpies 28-6 in their game at Davies Park.
The last of the split round games will be played between Ipswich Jets and the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Saturday night at North Ipswich Reserve.
The result from that match-up in the Colts could prove important, with a win providing the Seagulls with some breathing space at the top of the ladder, while victory is crucial for the Jets to keep them in the top five.
In the other Saturday game, the Sunshine Coast will travel to Bishop Park to take on the ladder-leading Norths Devils in what could be a tough assignment.

Dolphins Snatch Late Draw

REDCLIFFE forward Ben Jones concedes the Dolphins were fortunate to come away with a share of the competition points in yesterday’s round 18 clash against the Norths Devils.
The physical Dolphin Oval clash finished in a controversial 12-12 draw after Redcliffe was awarded a penalty in the 79th minute.
The frustrated Norths camp could only watch on as Redcliffe’s Paul Ivan calmly slotted the penalty kick to deny the Devils their 14th win of the season.
The visiting team’s protests grew louder in the dying seconds of the game when Shane Perry re-started play for the final time with a short kick that the Dolphins appeared to fumble.
Norths players screamed for an off-side penalty but referee Michael Wise had a good view of the incident and calmly called full-time after the tackle.
Speaking to the ABC after the game, Jones said he was satisfied with the referee’s ruling but was relieved to take home a draw.
“It was a tough game,” Jones said.
“We probably were lucky to get away with a draw in the end.”
However, Jones declared the Dolphins were “on the up” after battling through a spate of injuries and a mid-season form slump.
“We’ve got some young players who are learning the week to week grind of first grade,” he said.
“I can only see us going up from here.”
Both sides made mistakes in the opening half but it was the Devils who struck first through a powerful effort from Gladstone product Brendon Gibb.
Troyden Watene’s conversion provided a 6-0 lead after 17 minutes.
But the Dolphins hit back soon after with Chris Fox’s fancy footwork catching the Devils off guard close to the line.
Fox produced an even better right foot step to slice through again in the 35th minute for a 10-6 lead.
However, Norths were able to take a 12-10 advantage into half-time after Asher Elemani took full advantage of an Ashton Sims off-load to burrow his way over under the posts.
REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS 12 (Chris Fox 2 tries; Paul Ivan, Chris Fox goals) drew NORTHS DEVILS 12 (Asher Elemani, Brendon Gibb tries: Troyden Watene 2 goals) at Dolphin Oval.

Round 18 Intrust Super Cup Preview

REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v NORTHS DEVILS
Where & When: Saturday, July 24 @ Dolphin Oval, 2pm* live on ABC TV
Preview: Redcliffe speedster Ryan Cullen turns out for his 150th appearance in the Queensland Cup. The livewire fullback scored three tries in last weekend’s loss to the Sunshine Coast. The hat-trick took his career tally to 111 tries, the benchmark in the long-standing competition. Cullen, who has also had stints with Easts and Central, will need to be at his best if the Dolphins are to upset the competition leaders in the 2pm ABC TV clash. Redcliffe enters the match in fourth spot, but have a host of teams right on their tail. The Devils – 28-12 winners over Easts last weekend – can take a step closer to securing the minor premiership with a round 18 victory. The Nundah club is gradually getting back to full-strength with Gideon Mzembe, Mark Leafa and Joe Bond all named to make their top grade returns. Key halfback Matt Smith is also close to a comeback. Saturday’s clash will see former Redcliffe premiership-winning star Shane Perry return to Dolphin Oval in a Devils jersey for the first time.
EASTS TIGERS v BURLEIGH BEARS
Saturday, July 24 @ Langlands Park, 2pm
Fresh from a 50-18 thumping of the Central Comets, the Burleigh Bears will start hot favourites in this Langlands Park clash. Last week’s win came at just the right time for Mark Gee’s outfit, which has a host of teams right on its hammer in the intriguing race for top six spots. Easts are out of finals contention, but could be more than nuisance value with the likes of Denan Kemp and Lagi Setu named in the starting team. Bears fullback Nick Parfitt scored 28 points last weekend to eclipse 1300 career points in the Queensland Cup. But the real star for Burleigh at Browne Park last Saturday was talented hooker Riley Brown, who scored a try of his own and had a hand in a number of others in a scintillating performance. In the head-to-head stakes, the Bears have the better of the duel with Easts, winning 18 games compared to the Tigers’ 11.
CENTRAL COMETS v NORTHERN PRIDE
Saturday, July 24 @ Browne Park, 7pm
Comets forward Alan Rothery’s season has ended on a bitter note, with the big forward suspended for a total of 11 matches on three separate charges (reckless high tackle, striking and contrary conduct) following his team’s loss to the Burleigh Bears at Browne Park last Saturday. The news on the judiciary front was much better for the Pride though after young five-eighth Ryan Stig took an early plea to a dangerous throw charge and avoided a one-match ban. Stig, who scored a classy try in the Pride’s 22-16 win over the Mackay Cutters last weekend, partners Chris Sheppard in a halves combination that is getting better by the week. If, as expected, the Pride beat the Comets in Rockhampton, the Cairns club could be sitting in fifth spot with four games to play. Jason Roos plays his 50th Queensland Cup match for the Pride.
WYNNUM MANLY v MACKAY CUTTERS * Live on BAY FM
Sunday, July 25 @ BMD Kougari Oval, 2pm
Wynnum Manly has a big incentive to deliver a special performance in front of their home fans, with players involved in the club’s remarkable 1975 season attending Sunday’s blockbuster. The ‘75 season was arguably the most successful in the Seagulls' 60-year history, with all three senior grades qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time, and the reserve and third grade teams winning both their respective premierships against the competition's minor premiers. Interestingly, Wynnum Manly’s Intrust Super Cup, FOGS Cup and Colts teams are all on target to play finals footy this year. The spotlight on Sunday though will well and truly fall on Paul Green’s top grade outfit which is in contention for a top three finish following last week’s 38-6 thumping of the Jets. The Seagulls will come up against a Cutters team determined to hit back after a six-point loss to the Northern Pride. The Cutters have named a formidable centre pairing, with Donald Malone to partner Josh Hannay. But coach Paul Bramley will again look to proven forwards Isaak Ah Mau and Liam McDonald to set the platform up front. The Cutters tasted success at BMD Kougari Oval last year and have won three of the five previous encounters against the baysiders.
SOUTHS LOGAN v IPSWICH JETS
Sunday, July 25 @ Davies Park, 3pm
Ian Lacey celebrates his 100th Queensland Cup match in what has been a disappointing season for the former Toowoomba and Aspley playmaker. Lacey’s season has been plagued by injury and a number of near misses, but the Jets halfback would love nothing more than to spring a surprise on Souths Logan. Ipswich would have to win at least three of its remaining five games to be a chance of avoiding the wooden-spoon. Sunday’s round 18 match could be a lopsided outing for the Jets unless they turn up with an improved attitude against a Magpies outfit that won’t hold back after consecutive defeats for the first time this year. The Magpies have been strengthened by the return of Queensland Residents star Brad Cross and will again have the services of Raiders players Brett Kelly, James Stuart and Marc Herbert. Souths Logan stalwart Quentin Laulu-Togagae needs one more try to become the first Magpies player to reach 50 tries in the Queensland Cup.
TWEED HEADS v SUNSHINE COAST
Sunday, July 25 @ Ned Byrne Field, 3pm
Tweed’s moment of truth arrives in Sunday’s 3pm clash against the red-hot Sea Eagles. A win would give the Seagulls a genuine chance of qualifying for the finals, particularly as three of their remaining four games are against teams who occupy the last three positions on the Intrust Super Cup ladder. However, a loss here would almost certainly spell the end of the Tweed’s late surge, which has grown legs in recent weeks following stirring victories over finals-bound teams Wynnum Manly and Souths Logan. Potential NRL call ups and injury concerns could make life tough for the Seagulls this weekend, although only a fool would write the Seagulls off given Brad Davis’ sparkling recent form. Like the Tweed, Brandon Costin’s Sunshine Coast outfit has had several disruptions with key personnel changes in recent week. But the Sea Eagles have stood tall with two terrific wins over Souths Logan and Redcliffe and suddenly look capable of repeating last year’s stunning premiership surge. The Coast sit in sixth spot on percentages but have the second best record in attack and the third best defensive record.

The Norths Devils moved to the outright lead in the Intrust Super Cup after their 28-12 win over the Easts Tigers at Bishop Park today.
The Devils led 18-6 at half-time, but were forced to work hard in the second half after the Tigers crossed for the first points after the break to put the heat on the home team.
But Norths pulled away with tries in the 57th and 71st minute to move two points clear of the Souths Logan Magpies.
With five rounds remaining, the Devils are now in the box seat to claim the prestigious minor premiership.
The versatile Adam Watene had another outstanding game for the Nundah club, scoring a try and kicking four goals in the comfortable 16-point win.
Queensland Residents winger Daniel Ogden took his season try-scoring tally to 16, but he has been overtaken on the leader’s board by Redcliffe dynamo Ryan Cullen who pocketed a hat-trick on Saturday.
However, Cullen’s haul wasn’t enough to get the Dolphins over the line against the Sunshine Coast.
The Sea Eagles recorded a strong 34-16 despite missing a number of their big guns in the Stockland Park clash.
Brandon Costin’s team has now jumped into sixth spot on percentages but can ill-afford to stumble against the dangerous Tweed this weekend with Mackay and the Northern Pride also locked on 18 competition points.
The Pride continued its stunning late season revival with a strong 22-16 win over the Cutters in Mackay.
Kaine Manihera and Ryan Stig scored fantastic individual tries for the visitors, who will be aiming for a fifth successive win this weekend when they venture to Browne Park for a round 18 clash with the Comets.

'Big Five' Take A Dive

ROUND 16 has proven to be a memorable weekend for the ‘little guys’.
In a series of shock results, the five top ranked teams leading into the round all went down to sides below them on the Intrust Super Cup ladder.
The only match that went according to script was Friday night’s clash between the Northern Pride and Ipswich Jets at Barlow Park.
The Pride led 14-0 at half-time before running out comfortable 36-8 winners, with Clint Amos notching a try-scoring double for the home team.
However, the upsets didn’t take long to start rolling in, with the two underdogs winning Saturday’s 2pm matches.
The Sunshine Coast knocked over premiership front-runners Souths Logan 16-8 and Easts scored a tenacious 17-16 win over Redcliffe.
A Jace van Dijk field goal in the 78th minute secured the win for the Tigers at Langlands Park.
In Saturday’s 5.30pm blockbuster in Mackay, the sixth-placed Cutters continued their march towards September action with a 28-22 victory over the fifth-placed Burleigh Bears.
Donald Malone scored two tries for the Cutters, who have leapfrogged Burleigh on the competition ladder.
But perhaps the biggest upset of the round arrived later that night when the struggling Central Comets thrashed joint competition leader the Norths Devils 34-16 at Browne Park.
Comets utility back Jade Williams ran in four of the home team’s six tries in a dazzling performance.
Williams became just the second Comets player to score four tries in a Queensland Cup game. Heath Egglestone was the first to achieve the milestone in 1997 against Logan.
The weekend of upsets was competed on Sunday when Wynnum Manly became the fifth big scalp to hit the canvas.
Tweed, battling to keep its faint finals hopes alive, put the home team to the sword with a big 42-16 victory in the battle of the Gulls at BMD Kougari Oval.

Round 16 Intrust Super Cup Preview

CENTRAL COMETS v NORTHS DEVILS
Where & When: Browne Park, Saturday 7pm
Head-to-Head: Norths 17, Central 8, Drawn 2
Preview: Shane Perry (Norths) moves past Matt Lockyer to become the ninth most capped player in the Queensland Cup with 189 games. The 11th placed Comets are all but out of finals contention after a heartbreaking 20-18 loss to Redcliffe last weekend. In contrast, the Devils are locked in a tight battle for the minor premiership with Souths Logan.
NORTHERN PRIDE v IPSWICH JETS @ Barlow Park, Friday 7pm
* Head-to-Head: Pride 3, Ipswich 3
* The Pride is on the hunt for a hat-trick of wins in this rare Friday night clash at Barlow Park. Ipswich is out of finals contention, but would love to spoil the Pride’s bid for a third-straight appearance in the Queensland Cup finals.
* The Skill360 Northern Pride officially launched its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) today to coincide with NAIDOC Week and the home game. Northern Pride chairman Bob Fowler said the club was proud to be driving the exciting initiative. “We commend the work Reconciliation Australia are doing and are proud to officially launch our RAP to show how we are going to assist in ‘closing the gap’ and providing equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in today’s society,” he said.
SOUTHS LOGAN v SUNSHINE COAST @ Brandon Park, Saturday 2pm* Live on ABC TV
* Head-to-Head: Souths Logan 3, Sunshine Coast 1
* Despite being fourth in attack and third in defence, Sunshine Coast are still outside the top six.
* Sunshine Coast's only win over Souths Logan was in last year's preliminary final which they won with a try on the final siren.
* Reece Robinson's hat-trick against Wynnum was the 18th time a Magpie has scored a Qld Cup hat-trick.
* Quentin Laulu-Togagae has moved to equal 10th on the all-time Queensland Cup try scorers with 82 (level with David Seage) - 48 of them are for Souths, the highest for the Magpies.
EASTS TIGERS v REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS @ Langlands Park, Saturday 2pm
* Head-to-Head: Redcliffe 19, Easts 11, Drawn 1
* Derrick Watkins plays his 50th game for Redcliffe (138th overall for Red/Asp/Too/NQ).
* Jace Van Dijk has moved to 500 Qld Cup points in 85 games with Toowoomba/Souths Logan/Wynnum Manly/Easts
MACKAY CUTTERS v BURLEIGH BEARS @ Mackay Juniors, Saturday 5.30pm
* Head-to-Head: Mackay 3, Burleigh 2
* The competition table sets an intriguing backdrop to this round 16 clash. Burleigh sits in fifth on 17 points, with the Cutters one point further back following their first home loss of the season to the Norths Devils last week. With the Sunshine Coast and Northern Pride in hot pursuit, the team that emerges without the two competition points here could find themselves under extra pressure.
* Donald Malone (Mackay) and Dayne Weston (Burleigh) return from representative commitments with the Residents team.
WYNNUM MANLY v TWEED HEADS @ BMD Kougari Oval, Sunday 3pm
* Head-to-Head: Wynnum 8, Tweed 8
* Last week’s loss was Wynnum's biggest to Souths in their 28 Queensland Cup clashes.
* Paul Green’s Wynnum Manly team has slipped out of third spot, but can regain that position if they win and Redcliffe lose to Easts.

Devils Hold Out Cutters

The Norths Devils held on to win over the fast finishing Mackay Cutters, 28-26.
The loss not only brought an end to the Cutters’ five-game winning streak, but also blemished their unbeaten record at home.
Both teams were coming out of a weekend off – but the break didn’t seem to dent the Devils attacking momentum following their last start 40-22 win of the Ipswich Jets.
Bramley told the Mackay Daily Mercury that he felt his team “lacked a lot of energy” both in the game and in the lead-up to the clash.
“We were very flat in our final training run and I was a bit worried about it,” Bramley said.
“I sort of had a gut feeling about this game. It’s disappointing.”
“Maybe that week off just flattened us too much,” he said.
It started well for the Cutters however, with new Cowboys signing Arana Taumata crossing first for the home side.
Norths struck back soon after with two tries but a Darren Griffiths try saw the scores levelled at 10-10 at half-time.
After having a try disallowed after the break the Cutters were put on the back foot when Brendon Gibb crossed to take Norths ahead.
The Devils then scored two more tries in quick succession to have the home side reeling.
But the Cutters were sparked back into action after a good run from back-rower Jardine Bobongie kick-started their fightback.
Michael Comerford scored the first of the Cutters’ second half tries, while late call-up to the team Khan Ahwang brought the deficit down to eight points with five minutes on the clock.
Home hopes were raised again when prop Isaak Ah Mau crashed over the line. Josh Hannay’s conversion brought the Cutters to within two points of the Devils, but that was as close as they would get.
The Cutters have now slipped back down the ladder to sixth spot, and have an important home game against the Burleigh Bears this weekend.

MACKAY CUTTERS v NORTHS DEVILS
Where & When: Sunday, July 4 @ Mackay Juniors 3pm
Preview: Two teams destined for big things at the business end of the season cross paths in a July blockbuster. The Cutters have marched into fifth spot and a victory here would equal their best ever winning run of six games (2008-09). But they’ll have to do it without noted speedster Donald Malone, who played his way into a Queensland Residents jumper last weekend. There is no shortage of pace and skill in the Cutters backline despite Malone’s absence, with former Cowboy Josh Hannay named in the centres alongside North Queensland recruit Arana Taumata. The Devils also have a talented backline that will this week include excitement machine Joe Bond. Bond’s season has been disrupted by injury but he now has a good opportunity to strike form ahead of the finals. The Cutters will wear red socks to help raise awareness for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service’s Donate For Your State campaign. “We want to encourage all Queenslanders to do their bit to help Australia’s blood supply,” said Mackay halfback Todd Seymour.
REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS v CENTRAL COMETS
Saturday, July 3 @ Dolphin Oval, 2pm* live on ABC TV
Without a player in the Queensland Residents team for first time since 1993, the Redcliffe Dolphins will be at full-strength for their home clash against the Comets. The Dolphins will start short-priced favourites to record their 10th win of the Intrust Super Cup season against the misfiring Comets. Central has been unable to repeat their dazzling 2009 form and it would take an extraordinary effort from the Rockhampton club to qualify for this year’s top six. The Comets have cut former Queensland Residents centre Karl Johnson from its books. Johnson hopes to play with the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles for the remainder of season. Comets coach Wayne Barnett, who guided Country to an impressive win over City in last week’s representative clash, will look to re-gather his team’s focus for the do-or-die encounter. The Comets will be hoping a repeat of their last performance in front of the ABC TV cameras – a 30-6 thumping of Wynnum Manly.
EASTS TIGERS v SUNSHINE COAST
Saturday, July 3 @ Langlands Park, 2pm
Manly enforcer Joe Galuvao has been named to make his first appearance for the Sydney club’s feeder side in this must-win clash. Galuvao is no stranger to the Queensland Cup, having played five games for Easts in 2007. The 106kg forward’s inclusion provides a timely lift for a Sea Eagles outfit that will be missing representative players Darcy Lussick, Jamie Buhrer and Daly Cherry-Evans. The trio will be in camp with the Queensland Residents team being prepared for battle by Sunshine Coast coach Brandon Costin. Broncos flyer Denan Kemp has been named to play his second-straight match for Easts. The Tigers are coming off a confidence-boosting 30-22 victory over the Central Comets. The Langlands Park club would virtually have to win every game from here on in to be a chance of qualifying for the finals.
TWEED HEADS v NORTHERN PRIDE
Saturday, July 3 @ Ned Byrne Field, 2pm
Cowboys youngsters James Segeyaro and Aiden Day have been added to the Northern Pride bench as the Cairns club looks to the future. The Pride will also wind back the clock after naming veteran Rod Jensen on the bench for Saturday’s clash against the dangerous Tweed Heads combination. Jensen retired after the Pride’s grand final loss to the Sunshine Coast last year but he has recently made a return to the Cairns & District Rugby League with the Kangaroos club. His experience will be a vital asset to a Pride team that must win to keep its semi-final hopes alive. Halfback Chris Sheppard plays his 50th Queensland Cup match for the Pride. His duel with Tweed No. 7 Brad Davis should be one of the highlights of the round 15 clash. Davis was an unlucky omission from the Queensland Residents team and the former Titan will be keen for a big performance. Davis and his Tweed teammates will don yellow armbands to promote the Cancer Council’s Call to Arms campaign.
IPSWICH JETS v BURLEIGH BEARS
Saturday, July 3 @ North Ipswich Reserve, 6pm
Titans star Esi Tonga is in line to play his comeback match after a long injury lay off. If given the green light today, Tonga will saddle up for the Jets in their round 15 clash against the Burleigh Bears. Although out of finals contention, the last-placed Jets have a big incentive to perform. The club’s 1990 premiership-winning Colts team is attending the North Ipswich Reserve clash. The Jets are down on key personnel but they have been competitive at home all season and should provide stiff opposition for the Bears. With a three point buffer on its nearest challenger, sixth-placed Burleigh is well placed to play finals football for the first time since 2005. With in-form prop Dayne Weston unavailable due to representative commitments, the Bears will rely on Kale Burton and Martin Griese to take the side forward.
SOUTHS LOGAN v WYNNUM MANLY
Sunday, July 4 @ Davies Park, 3pm
In a huge boost for Wynnum Manly, Damien Quinn has been named in the Seagulls side for his first Queensland Cup appearance since 2005. Quinn, who has returned home after a successful overseas stint with the Celtic Crusaders, holds Wynnum’s points scoring record with 482 from 62 games. He is the sixth top scorer with 750 points from 102 games with Wynnum and Toowoomba. Quinn’s return has come at a perfect time for the Seagulls who have three players unavailable this weekend due to Queensland Residents commitments. The Magpies are even harder hit, with four players – David Milne, Brad Cross, Kieran Whalley and Phil Dennis – involved in the Residents clash. Their unavailability will test the Magpies’ depth but coach Mark Beaumont is quietly confident his patched up team can hit back after their round 14 loss to the Pride.

Spark Returns For Devils

NORTHS snapped a two-match losing streak today and soured Danny Coburn’s 250th game celebrations with a 40-22 victory over the Ipswich Jets at Bishop Park.
Milestone man Coburn and his teammates were hunting an upset Intrust Super Cup victory over the Devils to salvage something from a frustrating season.
But the Devils recaptured the form that saw them dominate the early rounds of the competition, shooting out to a comfortable 22-4 half-time lead.
The Jets struck first in the second half to close the margin to 12 points but when classy playmaker Shane Perry strolled over in the 51st minute, the contest was as good as over.
Perry rarely missed a beat all afternoon, with his superb kicking game terrorising Ipswich’s back three.
Ipswich was reduced to 12 men in the second half after Warren Schillings was given his marching orders for a high tackle.
Devils winger Daniel Ogden rubbed further salt into Ipswich’s wounds when he snared an intercept in the 64th minute and raced 80m for his 15th try of the season.
Ipswich fielded one of its most inexperienced sides in years, with youngsters James Furminger and Sam Martin taking the field for the injury-hit Jets.
Ryan Barton and Dale Robertson were also called into the Ipswich side, which will welcome a week off before playing Burleigh at home.

Tweed Puts Heat On Devils

TWEED Heads has punished an under-strength Norths Devils outfit to maintain touch with the Intrust Super Cup top six.
Superbly led by inspirational halfback Brad Davis, the Seagulls ran riot in the opening 40 minutes despite conceding an early intercept try to Norths winger Daniel Ogden.
The Tweed responded quickly after Ogden’s 90m effort, with tries from James Wood, Cameron White, Shannon Walker and Dominque Peyroux putting the home team in the box seat.
Most of the tries had a touch of class about them, with Tweed’s ball skills and pace catching Norths off-guard on numerous occasions.
Wood and Walker were particularly dangerous throughout the contest and on more than one occasion terrorised fullback Dean Bannerman – the Devils’ last line of defence.
Bannerman is one of several youngsters to have slotted into the top grade side in recent weeks in the wake of a mounting injury toll.
With the likes of Javarn White, Matt Smith, Jacob Fauid and Gideon Mzembe out of action, the Devils have dropped back to the field.
They have now lost their share of the competition lead, with the Magpies occupying top spot after their thrilling 28-26 win over the Burleigh Bears.
Although there is little danger of Norths missing the finals, the injury crisis and the manner in which the Nundah club buckled under pressure from Tweed is a major concern for coach Kevin Carmichael.
The Devils scored just one try in the second half, with Tweed going on to win the match 40-10.

WHEN state honours are on the line – it is always good to have the support of a home crowd behind you.
(See bottom of article for curtain-raiser kick off times)
The Queensland Under 18s – coached by Jon Buchanan – will take on the NSW Under 18s on Wednesday night in a curtain-raiser to Origin II at Suncorp Stadium.
“They will be playing in front of a home crowd – I have told them what a special opportunity it is for these blokes and said how special it was to be playing at Lang Park,” Buchanan said.
The team will face off against a talented NSW team who are intent on silencing the home crowd.
“We have had a bit of a look at NSW – they are big and quick,” Buchanan said.
“Most of the boys have played (against them) before – and they are pretty familiar with what we will be facing.
“We have a number of smaller guys who are pretty quick on their feet, so the key will be to move them around.”
For Buchanan, it has been a relatively straightforward process to prepare the team for the game – with a number of the boys having previously played together, including under his watch at Norths Colts.
“It has been good; many of these boys have played together coming through as juniors, in Australian Schoolboys teams and for Queensland as Under 16s.
“So it has been pretty easy for me, they are all coming out of good systems – everyone has slotted in fine.”
But not everything has gone smoothly during their preparations, with an injury to Mitchell Frei forcing a reshuffle to the team with Chris Binge shifting to the backrow and Jay Lobwein coming in from the Cowboys at hooker.
Queensland's preparations included a training session with the State of Origin side.
“We had a really good opposed session with the Origin side the other day,” Buchanan said.
“It was good for them to come up against those players; I think they took a lot away from it.
“The boys were pretty excited by it and they were all still talking about it on the bus on the way home.”

Devils Show Character in Defeat
I’m not one to usually say I told you so but on this occasion…I told you so! The top of the table clash on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Park was an absolute cracker. The only downer was that the Devils didn’t come away with two the points, going down 40-36 to the Magpies.
A big score for a top of the table clash I know, but I’m not complaining. A game with 13 tries and 76 points in total could’ve easily led one to the assumption that both sides didn’t turn up to defend. An alternative take and perhaps a more accurate one though, is that both sides defended doggedly but simply showed class in scoring their points. Whichever angle you take, one thing is for sure; punters certainly got their money’s worth with the battle that was on display.
It’s not every weekend you get the opportunity to watch NRL experienced players run around at your local footy ground, let alone to see them in action against your local team in such a highly physical yet skilful game of rugby league (hence why I’m not complaining ).
Even though they lost, there was a lot to take from watching the Devils play on the weekend. Up against a star studded magpies outfit boasting 11 NRL players and without key players Matt Smith and Natthan Cleaver, most people would’ve expected a whitewash, but not the Devils.
Going into halftime down 28-6, the Devils had every right to throw the towel in and wave the white flag, but they didn’t. Instead they showed true character. Behind on the scoreboard and with their backs to the wall, they somehow managed to summon all the courage, determination and energy left in their spirits to fight back. Clawing their way back from the brink of a 22 point deficit, they proved they could match it with the ‘NRL boys’. For me, this was what was entertaining to watch. Queensland’s entire rugby league sports ethos is built around this notion of never giving up, never surrendering and mateship. Don’t get me wrong, they still lost the game of football but at least they can walk away knowing they have it in them to stand up and be counted for and not take a backward step when the chips are down.
One man that certainly gave it everything was barnstorming Devils lock, Eddy Purcell. The former Warriors Toyota Cup recruit was on fire right from the get go, scoring in the first minute of the game. He then pushed, barged and crashed his way over for two other tries in similar fashion. Between all that he was charging at the line, finding his front and dishing out punishment in defence. It comes as no surprise then that Purcell was this week’s Player’s Player. A great effort considering he was bed ridden for most of the week with a chest infection.

Purcell’s Power is in Running Game
This week I decided to delve a little more into the journey of the explosive New Zealand forward, Eddy Purcell. At just 21 years of age the young buck has been in great form of late with his powerful running game.
When you look at the players Purcell idolised growing up though, it’s no wonder he carries the ball so strongly. While playing for the Mt. Albert Lions as a 15 year old, Purcell used to watch the likes of David Fa’alogo, brother Fala Fa’alogo, Hutch Maiva and Fui Fui Moi Moi in the senior grades. Not a bad bunch of blokes to model a running game around, even if for a young halfback as Purcell was in his junior years.
But it wasn’t just their running game that Purcell wanted to emulate; he too shared aspirations to make it in the NRL. “As a kid I dreamt of playing in the NRL and still do. That’s why I moved over here, to chase my dream. Seeing those boys make it was great, knowing that local boys from Mt. Albert could do it inspired me,” Purcell said.
After a season with the Warriors Toyota Cup side in 2007, Purcell decided to pursue his dream in Australia. Moving to Queensland he began his tenure with Norths at the end of 2008. His time in 2009 was mostly spent in Queensland cup, punctuated only by a short period in reserve grade.
Unhappy with his first season at Norths, Purcell vowed to do better in 2010. So far he’s done so, cementing his spot in the Queensland Cup side, Purcell isn’t looking back. When asked about what was behind his improvement, he was quick to mention his family. “I’m a bit more settled now. Having my family here really helps. My partner Toni is my foundation and my daughter Riley is the centre of my life. After a hard day it’s good to come home to your family,” he said.
With his NRL dream constantly in the back of his mind, Purcell understands that it’s a work in progress. For now though he remains committed to performing for the Devils. “I know it’s a long road but I have to just keep working hard. I know I have a lot to improve on but every week I just try and go out there and do my job,” he said.
Often you’ll hear coaches comment about the importance of having senior players in a team to model desired behaviours for the younger players. This couldn’t be truer in the case of Purcell, who says he has enjoyed benefiting from having senior footballers around the club to learn from. “With players like Pezza (Shane Perry) and Mark (Leafa), having one in the forwards and one in the backs is great, they take us under their wing and we follow their example,” he said.
Sacrifice is a big part of chasing a dream and Purcell says he’s had to make his own to be able to be at his best for the Devils this year. “I had to make a few lifestyle changes. I’ve changed some of my eating habits and I’m doing extra’s at training,” he said. The proof is in the pudding; Purcell has been playing close to 80 minutes each game.
With his sights set on a big year for the Devils and his NRL dream on the horizon, you get the feeling that whichever way his career takes him, Purcell’s feet will remain firmly on the ground. When asked how he felt about his hat-trick on the weekend, Purcell was humble in his response and quick to deflect any individual praise. “I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time, everyone put in to get to that point”, he said.
You can catch Eddy and the rest of the boys in action this weekend on ABC at 2pm as they take on the Tweed Seagulls in this week’s televised game.

The North Queensland side won, kicking an enormous penalty goal after the final siren to secure the title.

Never Say Die Devils

THE Norths Devils staged an incredible second-half fight back at Langlands Park on Saturday to claim this year’s Cyril Connell Cup title.
The Devils clinched the 26-24 win over the Gold Coast Blue side after scoring a try two minutes out from the fulltime siren and kicking the conversion.
However, it was an against the odds victory as Norths had entered the dressing rooms at half-time trailing the Gold Coast side by 14 points.
“You could say it was edge of your seat stuff,” victorious Norths coach Steve Hegarty said of the game. “It was nerve-wracking.
“At half-time we were down 24-10, but we knew if we did what we had to do, the points would come and the opposition would tire because they are such a big team.”
Asked about what he said at half-time to motivate the team, Hegarty said it was all about staying positive.
“At half-time, I approached them positively, we had to identity where we had let ourselves down; we had to identify where we were falling down
“But there was no panic, we knew what we had to do and they believed they could still win it.”
And what was especially pleasing to the coach was the fact there were no real stand-out moments from individual players that turned the game in their favour, but rather the whole team stood up as one to take on the challenge.
“Everyone stood up at different times and they all did their jobs,” Hegarty said.
“We have our representative players in the team – but it was the players who might be considered the next level down, our unknowns, who stood up big time, especially in the second half.”
The Devils were one of the form teams throughout the Under 16s competition, coming in at second on the competition ladder, and Hegarty said their results reflected the sense of belief that was fostered within the team from day one.
“They had the belief that we were a fair shot, but we knew that we had to work hard,” he said.
“The competition was so strong, there were a lot of good teams and there was a lot of good footy played.”
